Actions – by an individual or group – that lack the conviction of one's professed intention.
(Please note, I stumped the dictionary with this one, even though it IS a word, so the definition will be refractory)
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/disingenuous
adjective
1. lacking in frankness, candor, or sincerity; falsely or hypocritically
ingenuous; insincere:
Her excuse was rather disingenuous.
This is one of my favorite words, and I'll expound a little from my own personal experience. While the definition is acceptable, I can do better.
“Variance between professed intent and observable circumstances; inconsistency.”
Basically, that which is disingenuous is false and/or untrue. While this can include deliberate lies, not all that is disingenuous is a (known) lie. For example, the perception that the US politicians are by and large good people is (arguably) disingenuous, even though it is not known to be by many of its (the position) supporters.
