  1. have you ever sang along
    to the radio

    an old song

    you haven't heard in years

    you know the song

    how you felt when you
    first heard it

    who you were

    and the lyrics
    come back to you
    in the same rhythm
    as if no time
    had even passed

    but you don't
    remember all the words

    you remember most
    but not all

    and the ones you
    cannot remember
    you come so close

    you feel

    they are in reach

    so you comb through
    your mind

    before the next verse

    running the lyrics
    as straightly as you can
through the ear in your mind

    does the verse
    end in "light"
    or "let"
    or "lost"

    which is it
    which is it

    but as you think
    while the music continues on

    it finds you

    you realize
only one of the three words
    sounds right

it has a ring to it

    it feels right
    whereas the other words
    were merely products
    of your creative memory

    the truth
    then
    is not a thing
    but a feeling

a note played from the piano
    is not a physical

    but still definable

    if not more definable
    more universal

    than the hammer
    which strikes the chord
    to produce the sound

    though we may not know
what a perfect g chord sounds like
or even how it is played

    we can all recognize
    when it is played incorrectly

    and as a result

    we can recognize
    the harmony
    of the chord
    when it is played
    as it is meant
    to be played

  2. the truth
    can not change
    a dishonest man

    but it can
    an honest man

    that old master
    who peers into
    your soul
    and sees you
for what it is you are

    it says nothing
    but notices everything

    it has no body
    but every body
    at the same time

  3. django reinhardt
    could play the guitar
    like no man before him

    and few have since

i will omit covering his biography
    but django reinhardt
    at an early age
    lost the use
    of all but two fingers
    on his left hand

    his solos were played

    with just two fingers

    it could be thought
    that his condition
    rendered him only two-fifths
    with regard to ability

    but his ambition
    was otherwise

  5. the greatest aspect of music
    to any passionate musician

    is taking something
    that has been defined
    by all
    and redefining it
    in such a way

    that all others
    who previously defined
    such a thing

    as well as those
    who believed
    in such a definition

    are left
    with only
    their old beliefs

  6. who owns a song?

    we can define this legally
in terms of rights and such
    of course

    but metaphorically
    who OWNS a song?

have you heard such a song
    where the artist
    did not write the song
    but deeply convinced you otherwise?

    as if the pain
    the original artist felt
which compelled him to write the song
    was somehow transmuted
    to the later artist
maybe in a way that felt
    more true?

    with that said
    how do you quantify
    this feeling
    or observation?

  9. a very old man
    told me recently
    "you will never arrive"

    i found it peculiar
    at the time
    considering the context
of the conversation we were having

    but the manner
in which he said this to me
    made me consider back
    to the phrase
    quite continually
    ever since

it did not meet my understanding
    until yesterday evening
    while driving through the countryside
    where my family was raised

    what a sad thought
    to convince yourself
    that you have arrived
    while the greatest sights
    and the richest experiences
    hide just beyond your viewpoint

    the understanding
    can not be described
    in words or symbols

    it is an understanding
    of that depth
    so how could it?

    but i can of course
    share what prompted it

    and possibly help
    set the stage
    for such an understanding
    to share a monologue
    in the way it does

  10. a song can take you
    to nostalgia

    but where is that?

    where do you go
    when you relive a moment
    out of time
    more deeply
than when you originally experienced it?

    there are more emotions
    deeper emotions
    in recalling an experience
    than during the actual event
    itself

    that is the definition
    of art

  11. there are plenty of trite statements

    "it is what it is"

    "another day, another dollar"

    "off and running"

    "as thick as a ditch"

"a song is like a painting"

    well.....
    writing and composing
a song is certainly like painting
    filling in the blank spaces
    with colors and such

    but not the finished product
    not a painting

because there is no finished product

    it is always changing
    and evolving
    as does the creator
    of the piece

    a painting
    once it covers
    the entirety of the canvas

    is framed
    and placed on a wall

    it has borders

    a beginning and an end

    and is not often reinvented
    or attempted by other artists

    i consider the good songs
    of the late 30's

    the classics of the classics

    these songs are reinvented
    each decade

    by the originator

    as well as anyone else
who takes delight in the song
    and wishes to add
    to the way the song
    made them feel

  12. a few weeks ago
    i purchased a new computer
    and had to transfer
    all my writings and files
    from the old machine
    to the new machine

    in this process
    i came across
    a few hours of recordings

the first songs i committed to tape
    when i was maybe 14 or 15

    they were entirely unpolished
    and equally imperfect

    but i noticed something incredible

    creativity is curiosity
    in application

    i had no money
    to buy a nice guitar
    or a studio setup
or anything other than a ukulele
    made out of fancy cardboard

one you would sell to a tourist
if they happened to visit your shop

but what i was able to create
    with a tape recorder
    and a cardboard ukulele

    was somehow more imaginative
    than what i later recorded
    in a full studio
    with any instrument
    i could have needed

    it is in the emptiness
    where we create

    it is in the absence

    the blank space
    on the canvas

    where the paint is spread....

    it's interesting
    to see the creativity
    of your favorite musicians
before they were known as musicians

when they were just recording what they wanted

in a basement or living space
    somewhere entirely common

    with what little implements
    they had at the time

  13. i suppose both would be applicable

  14. Pace & Past?

  15. as a concept
    music is observationally illogical

    individuals invest a great deal
    of their freedom
    to create noises
    of appeal
    to the ears
    of others

it is something of primal nature
    seen throughout the primate world
    in rudimentary forms
    holding rhythm
    percussive tendencies

    it is innate
    to imitate auditory patterns
and respond to the feedback received

    rhythm aids in memory

    consider how you committed
    the alphabet to memory
    at a young age

    rhythm is a catalyst
    for the strongest awareness
    of nostalgia
    outside of scents

    i mention this today
because on the news network this morning
    a program aired
    where complicated robots
    performed equally complicated
    musical feats
    on a xylophone-like instrument

    and i wondered.....

    is this music?
    what defines music?

    would an audience react
    more or less
    to a robotic concert
    or a human concert
    of the same material?

    even if the robotic concert
    was performed with greater precision
    and intonation?

    what does music give?

    what does music take?

    why have we used
    variations of the same instruments
    for all of recordable time?

    we all recognize patterns

    we all create music

    even the old secretary
    in the office
who is numb to the world
clicks away at an ink pen
    in a way
    that is not random

    we hear patterns
    in the world around us
    and convert that into music
    by replicating the pattern
    as a rhythm
    as a beat
    and add our inflections
    and our essence
    to the structure
    that best mirrors our pace

    Got a two-for.

    The Pink Panther Theme

I used to have a trumpet solo to this song when I was in Junior high. I had only been playing for a couple of years, and was only starting to really get into it, but I knew that song because my parents had watched the Pink Panther when I was really young. At one of our concerts, without instruction I stood up and started dancing as I played.

    Radiohead - Creep

When I was in masonic youth, a good friend and 'upper class-man' would play this CD every time we went to visit other chapters. He had the uncensored version ("you're so fucking special" instead of "very"), which was in direct defiance of the fact that the organization prescribed clean word usage. He taught me about defying instruction while appearing to obey it, and hiding mischief in plain sight.

Ah hell, might as well make it a 3-way. ^_~

Les Friction - Louder Than Words (video compilation from Attack on Titan)

This particular song AND the associated anime have a subliminal effect on me. The Series is about a team of humans who fight against ridiculously large humanoids that are remarkably good at eating people. The mentality is one I have drawn inspiration from in many areas of life. The song I've only known about for a year, but it compliments the mentality of the series, and I often find myself listening to it on repeat for hours; it goes well with doing dishes.

  20. Now here's part two:
This is the AC/DC I never got to see but fucking plenty of people I know did...as they are where I am from. Music spans all ages if you can play.
Anyway this goes out to one of the most charismatic lead singers ever that without, I'm sure AC/DC would not have ever been taken seriously internationally.
    For Bon Fire
    Cheeky bugger on this one

This one is one of my favourite songs from his time with the band and it's a great live performance,, (although it has been taken and remixed it's still a live recording and lyrically this is a good one!

  21. This is a two part post to the band that blew my fucking mind apart when I saw em' live in 1996...I was ten years old and playing bass at that point and then I saw this band and that was that. Guitar it was and still to this day this midget warrior is inside my music and my performance! You can't hide what you were born from!

I'd never felt anything like it...I was fucking 10, and deaf for a week after. But this is one of my favourite bands and favourite memories I have that make me happy I'm alive and make me realise how powerful, impacting and shaping certain experiences can be and influence what you become.
Anyway....enough fucking babbling here is the best ROCK BAND EVER!!!!!!!!!
    Live in Spain, 1996

And this one (2009) is for ANYONE who thinks that people don't like Rock music anymore and it's a thing of the past....just fucking look at South America and how genuine their excitement/passion/appreciation to enjoy rock music is. That's 250,000 people (two nights in a row) This is a real fucking ROCK band...full speed ahead! \m/

  22. I really liked this band when their first album came out back in 03. Now I can't stand them...but this song is very funny lyrically and I think this guy is a brilliant singer.
    For the glam fans

  23. I saw this band in 2003 (the tour after this video) and they were great!
I love the way they are known as a "Rock" band but to open a show with such a calm peaceful song rather than blast everyone's ear off right away I thought was such a great idea!
    A great performance
    Enjoy the Long Road.

  24. This one's for everyone.
The first band I was ever head over heels obsessed with from around age 7.
To me this band was so unique but still very commercial sounding.
My personal favorite album by The Doors is "Morrison Hotel"
This is them performing on Ed Sullivan for the first and obviously only time.
    Embrace the strangeness...

  27. After I first heard this man play through a vinyl crackling needle around age 7...that's when I got bitten by the guitar bug and never looked back.

When I was listening to the song there was a link to (last 24 hours of Hendrix), normally I don't give a shit about them but this one I found quite interesting and compelling in what it says about the man behind the Fire purple haze guitar pioneer.

  29. This is the only christmas song i like.
The beautiful Kirsty MacColl was tragically killed in the year 2000. She was amazing in this song and Shane is one of my favourite performers and singers ever. People who cant not be themselves have always interested me.
    an early happy fucking christmas!
